Knowing Christ in Psalm 12 (part 2 of 2)

“Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore;
those who are loyal have vanished from the human race.
Everyone lies to their neighbor;
they flatter with their lips
but harbor deception in their hearts.
May the Lord silence all flattering lips
and every boastful tongue—
those who say,
“By our tongues we will prevail;
our own lips will defend us—who is lord over us?”
Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan,
I will now arise,” says the Lord.
“I will protect them from those who malign them.”
And the words of the Lord are flawless,
like silver purified in a crucible,
like gold refined seven times.
You, Lord, will keep the needy safe
and will protect us forever from the wicked,
who freely strut about
when what is vile is honored by the human race.” Psalm 12:1-8

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” Proverbs 18:21

Lies, deception, flattering lips, boastful tongue, honoring what is vile. These are the marks of the faithless and disloyal. They love to boast and flatter, honoring wicked deeds. They are the epitome of Romans 1:29-32:

“They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”

But what about when the Lord speaks. Unlike the faithless and disloyal, “the words of the Lord are flawless”, or as the NASB says “The words of the Lord are pure.”

Flawless.
Pure.

It is only because “the words of the Lord are flawless” that we can believe Him when He says:

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

“Your sins are forgiven.” Luke 7:48

“All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.” John 6:37

“Everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” John 6:40

While the world praises its own and honors what is vile, we praise and honor what is perfect and flawless. We praise and honor the Lord because He alone is worthy. Jesus will arise, and when He does, He will keep the afflicted safe and He will protect us forever from the wicked.
