Clean Fear / Knowing Christ in Psalm 19

I’ve been focusing on one verse this week. As long as we keep the context in mind, it is not a bad idea to look at one verse or phrase of Scripture. Focusing on a verse in context is like focusing your camera when taking a picture. Make sure you don’t crop out the surroundings or the story behind the picture, both of which frame and inform the object you are focusing on.

The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever. —Psalm 19:9

Psalm 19 opens in praise—The heavens declare the glory of God, the sky above proclaims His handiwork. Day to day pours out speech…

Then David zooms in on God’s speech—The law of Yahweh is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of Yahweh is sure, making wise the simple; The precepts of Yahweh are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of Yahweh is pure, enlightening the eyes…

Now the soul revived, made wise to the point of rejoicing with open eyes… to this one… The fear of Yahweh is clean, enduring forever.

There is one fear that will never end. One fear that is not sin. This fear is the beginning of faith. The fear of the Lord.

God requires this fear of us.

And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.  —Deuteronomy 10:12

Christ delighted in this fear.

His delight is in the fear of the Lord.  —Isaiah 11:3

In this fear, those in Christ are being made holy, becoming clean by coming out from the darkness of unbelief and idolatry.

And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said:

“I will dwell in them
And walk among them.
I will be their God,
And they shall be My people.”

“Come out from among them
And be separate, says the Lord.
Do not touch what is unclean,
And I will receive you.”

“I will be a Father to you,
And you shall be My sons and daughters,
Says the Lord Almighty.”

Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

—2 Corinthians 6:16-7:1

If the fear of Yahweh is clean, we must our lose dirty idols. We must leave behind the dark and unclean.

We must go out from where we are.
We must have one fear.
One fear is clean.
By one fear, we fear nothing else.

The LORD is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear?  —Psalm 27:1

There is no such thing as holy water.
We cleanse ourselves in the fear of the LORD.

The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever.  —Psalm 19:9

Be afraid.
Be clean.
Know Christ.

You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.  —John 15:3
